Team-based Learning: An Innovative Approach to Promoting Application and Transfer of Knowledge in School Psychology Training

Abstract

In efforts to improve the graduate education of school psychologists, it is important to consider the actual instructional strategies used within individual courses in the curriculum. Team-based learning (Michaelsen, Knight, & Fink, 2004) is an innovative active learning teaching strategy that focuses on collaborative learning, using testing as a learning activity, application and transfer of knowledge, and practice for making decisions and solving problems. Team-based learning may be an attractive option for trainers seeking to implement an active learning teaching approach that focuses on helping students learn to apply their learning to professional contexts.
